About Us About Us

Formed in 1996 by volunteer Worker Directors at First Group in Sheffield, TransaveUK was originally set up as a credit union for employees in the passenger transport industry. From the outset, the simple aim was to help colleagues in financial need and encourage the habit of saving regularly.

Over the years, we have extended our membership to cover employees from many other sectors, including engineering, police and healthcare. Today, TransaveUK has over 11,000 members and rising, with accumulated savings of over £20 million.

Credit Union Services

Like all credit unions, TransaveUK is a not-for-profit savings and loans cooperative. Members of TransaveUK pool their savings so we can lend responsibly to one another at a reasonable rate of interest.

We provide:

  • Competitive financial products, including savings accounts and loans
  • A friendly, professional and ethical service
  • A flexible, personal approach to their finances

There are no additional charges or fees for any of our services and any profits generated are put back into the credit union for the benefit of our members, normally in the form of an annual dividend.

Ethics, Values and Principles

TransaveUK’s primary aim is to promote good financial management by encouraging members to save. Over time, the member builds up sufficient savings to end the cycle of borrowing. In this way we help people to help themselves by encouraging saving and preventing debt.

If, however, members need a loan, we offer a low cost alternative to expensive bank loans, credit cards or even so-called ‘payday’ loans and unlicensed lenders. At the same time, members are required to continue saving regularly with us. This means, as the loan is paid off, the member continues to build up their savings.

We also provide a range of information and support for any member in financial difficulties. It’s reassuring to know that everything we do is underpinned by the internationally recognised ‘Co-operative Values and Principles

Democracy, Equality and Fairness

As a cooperative we are 100% owned and controlled by our members and work only in their interests. Our Board of Directors is directly elected by and from our membership, on the principle of one-person, one vote. It means every member, irrespective of the number of shares they hold, has an equal say in the running of our credit union. These cooperative values and principles are the foundation of our democratic, equal and fairer way of doing business.

Why we are different

Unlike many other financial services organisations, TransaveUK:

  • cares about where it invests and how it conducts its business
  • seeks to always be a responsible lender and not to overburden borrowers
  • does not try to sell costly or inappropriate products such as ‘PPI’
  • does not pay its managers or directors huge bonuses – we prefer to return any profit to members instead
  • does not gamble with members deposits via ‘casino banking’ or risky dealing methods
  • is not owned by external shareholders – we are a wholly member-owned mutual

Financial Security

TransaveUK is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA). These regulators are the same as for banks and building societies, requiring rigorous financial systems, fully trained staff and internal/external audit systems. Members’ savings are also protected by the Regulators, up to £85,000 per person. For further information please click here

Proud to be part of a wider movement

Credit unions are part of a wider international cooperative movement.

Today, more than 200 million people in over 100 countries have taken greater control over their finances by joining a credit union. In the UK alone there are over 350 credit unions with a total membership of more than one million people. TransaveUK is proud to play its part in ensuring the movement’s continued success.
